Get your feet wet with evening swim lessons at Daytona State

Swim LessonsDAYTONA BEACH, FL (March 4, 2011) – Don’t be a fish out of water this summer by not knowing how to swim and be safe around water. The American Red Cross “Learn to Swim” classes offered at Daytona State College’s Aquatic Center are designed to teach all ages to swim and be safe around aquatic environments. Classes are held Mondays and Wednesdays – the next session of classes start April 4.

Held in Daytona State’s 25-yard by 25-meter indoor heated pool, the program is broken into five groups:

Aquatic Exploration is designed for infants and toddlers (six month to three years) to be introduced to the water and swimming in a fun, safe and loving environment. Children will be taught the fundamentals that form the basis for swimming and introduced to basic swimming skills. Parent/adult accompaniment in the water is required. All children under the age of three must wear a swim diaper. Classes run from 4:30 -5 p.m., or 5:15 – 5:45 p.m., and cost $40.

Aquatic Adventure is designed for inexperienced children (four years above) to be introduced to the water and swimming in a fun, safe and loving environment. Children will be taught the fundamentals that form the basis for swimming and introduced to basic swimming skills.
Classes run from 4:30 - 5 p.m., or 5:15 – 5:45 p.m., and cost $40.

Aquatic Journey teaches children ages four through seven the fundamentals of swimming and basic water safety skills. Students are grouped by skill level with a student-teacher ratio not to exceed 5:1. This ratio provides a safe learning environment and fosters group interaction. If needed, students are provided flotation devices to aid in the learning process. Classes run from 4:30 - 5 p.m., or 5:15 – 5:45 p.m., and cost $40.

Aquatic Challenge offers seven levels ranging from beginner to advanced. Children (eight years to 12 years) are evaluated on the first day to determine their group placement. Students learn stroke techniques, proper breathing, personal water safety skills and methods of basic water rescue. Class runs from 6 – 6:45 p.m. and costs $45.

Adult Swim focuses on making the swimmer more comfortable in the water. It also aids in learning the different strokes and building endurance. Class runs from 6 – 6:45 p.m. and costs $45.

Water safety is stressed and taught to all participants. All instructors have been certified as American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors.

The Daytona State Aquatic Center is open Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., closed Sundays and on all college holidays. Any other closures will be posted at least one week in advance.
